Freight Trains and Autumn Leaves

With Liz Guertin

Sponsored by the Maryland Photography Alliance.

*************************

Nestled in the valleys of the Allegheny Front, Altoona, Pennsylvania was founded by the Pennsylvania Railroad and played a significant role in the manufacture of steam-powered rail in the middle of the 19th century. It played a pivotal role not only for manufacturing trains, but for ingenious solutions to raising rail up and over the mountains, including the world-famous Horseshoe Curve and other engineering marvels.

This 24-hour workshop will feature several excellent locations as we photograph modern-day freight trains in the midst of autumn colors.

We’ll be shooting from many different perspectives - from above and below, near and far, and often right beside the trains as they pass through both downtown Altoona and the Pennsylvania countryside. We’ll discuss and use a variety of techniques for capturing the trains - including panning, various degrees of blurring, selecting good backgrounds, and of course freezing the motion of the train entirely.

You are responsible for your hotel room and meals. Our first location is in downtown Altoona, and we suggest you find a room here. (Altoona has many options for you to choose from.) We plan to have at least one group meal.

Please note that these photos were taken in early Spring. We expect a very colorful autumn!

Additional notes: One of our locations can only be reached by climbing a long flight of stairs. A second location requires a 1/3 mile hike. If you have mobility issues this may not be the best workshop for you (though we’ll work with you as best we can).
